7/8/2023 0 Comments Detroit by Jon Milan![]() ![]() What Purple Gang member still hangs out in Clare? What spirits lurk at Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village? Here is a guide to all that and more, including Houdini’s Detroit connections, the poisonings at Cass Corridor’s Alhambra, and paranormal activity at Detroit’s historic Fort Wayne. This road trip to “the other side,” filled with hauntings, ghost towns, and bizarre tales of murder and mayhem, draws from more than 300 years of Michigan history-from the notoriously haunted remote lighthouses like Seul Choix in the Upper Peninsula to Eloise, one of the most famous psychiatric asylums in America, to the legend of Lover’s Leap on Mackinac Island. This book is the perfect glove compartment companion for exploring those paranormal parts of the Mitten State, as most of these hotels, restaurants, theaters, lighthouses, and other places are open to the public. Michigan has two beautiful peninsulas that are connected by stories, legends, and mysteries. ![]()

![]() ![]() The books on this list span historical eras and geographic place. ![]() Sometimes those stories are historical oddities being told for the first time, and sometimes they’re urgent, of-the-moment investigations into contemporary social problems. ![]() Starting with Truman Capote’s “nonfiction novel” In Cold Blood in 1966, that fascination birthed a genre: “true crime.” Today, book-length investigations like Capote’s still allow journalists to dig deep into a single story more fully than any other medium. People have been interested in crime for as long as stories have been told - Shakespeare’s plays are full of murder, sometimes featuring real (royal) people, for instance - and in the early 20th century, American newspapers printed every detail of every murder case they could find. True-crime documentaries, docu-dramas, and above all, podcasts, have become so popular that shows like Only Murders in the Building and Poker Face can poke fun at the trend.īut true crime didn’t begin with Serial or My Favorite Murder, or any of the recent miniseries based on salacious true crimes, from The Staircase to Candy (or Love and Death, which, like Candy, tells the story of a Texas housewife accused of murder). It’s no secret that people across the world are addicted to true crime. ![]() 7/8/2023 0 Comments Quatrefoil by James Barr![]() ![]() In the summer of 1946, just after the end of WWII, Philip Froelich heads from Oregon to Amphib Island in Seattle to undergo the proceedings for a General Court Martial. ![]() This is a very moving, sad and yet positive book which I enjoyed more and more as the story progressed. First published in 1950 it reveals what it was like for homosexuals when such an inclination could mean ruin, and so makes all the more interesting reading today. The plot twists and turns intriguingly and as the story develops Phillip becomes an ever more complex and appealing individual. I found this to be a really absorbing novel, rich in detail and peopled with interesting well drawn characters. The Court Marshall turns out to be the least of Phillips troubles as he battles with among others his family, his fianc?e and her mother, and his own sexuality. On his journey to Seattle Phillip encounters Tim Danelaw from whom he accepts a lift, not knowing then who Tim is or how much he will subsequently figure in his life. ![]() Set in 1946 after the Second World War mainly in Seattle, Phillip Froelich is facing Court Marshall following insubordination to his captain during an incident towards the end of the war. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Allie is new to school, and she’s had a history of short-circuiting on teachers and other kids. That’s a lot of history for one building. ![]() The hotel is located across the street from the Kremlin and managed to survive the Bolshevik revolution and the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. It’s the kind of place where you can’t help but picture what it was like at different points in time. I’ve even been lucky enough to stay there (and it looked mostly the same as Towles describes in the book). The book follows the Count for the next thirty years as he makes the most of his life despite its limitations.Īlthough the book is fictional, the Metropol is a real hotel. It’s 1922, and the Bolsheviks have just taken power of the newly formed Soviet Union. At the beginning of the book, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov is sentenced to spend his life under house arrest in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel. ![]() That one scene aside, A Gentleman in Moscow is a fun, clever, and surprisingly upbeat look at Russian history through the eyes of one man. I didn’t want to spoil anything for her, so I just had to wait until she caught up to me. When she saw me crying, she became worried that a character she loved was going to die. It’s usually a lot of fun, but it can get us in trouble when one of us is further along than the other-which recently happened when we were both reading A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.Īt one point, I got teary-eyed because one of the characters gets hurt and must go to the hospital. ![]() Melinda and I sometimes read the same book at the same time. ![]() |
